Georgia is home to hot summers, mild autumns, and cold, wet winters. The dramatic changes in the seasons, along with the severity of the summers and winters, can cause trouble for your lawn if proper precautions are not taken. Even if you follow all the proper practices! One of the troubles the Georgia weather can bring to your lawn is… Lawn diseases.
We know you’ve invested your hard earned time and money into your lawn! That’s why we’re here to help. Here are 4 common lawn diseases in Georgia, and everything you can do to protect against them!
Fairy rings are a common fungal disease that occurs during the fall and winter months, under wet conditions. The rings can range up to 200(!!) feet in diameter, and there will be mushrooms within the ring during fungus’ reproduction phrase (this is a dead giveaway that this disease is prevalent).
Because there is no natural control of fairy rings, following these prevention methods are important:
Dollar spot is another fungal disease that affects both warm, and cool seasoned grasses. It is most common in the late fall/early winter during periods of extreme moisture. If you find light tan, circular patches of dead grass on your lawn that is about the size of a silver dollar (hence the name), you may have dollar spot.
Zoysia patch is yet another fungal disease that affects all types of Zoysia grasses. It is most prevalent in cool, wet weather where it can grow and spread at a rapid pace. If precautions are not taken, you may begin to see 6-inch spots of dead, orange-colored grass that expands quickly.
The best way to prevent Zoysia patch is to avoid putting any pressure on your lawn when it is wet. This includes mowing it, walking on it, or having any services performed on it when moist. Along with this, aeration and fertilization will give your lawn the proper drainage and nutrients needed to protect against this fungal disease.
